Mattie Lou General, A Life Well-Lived
Mattie Lou General, born March 19, 1932, in Macon County Georgia, quietly passed away on January 26, 2026, after a brief illness at the Piedmont Macon Medical Center & Hospital in Macon, Georgia. Her nephew, Kenneth Grace, was with her. She and her twin sister Annie, who preceded her in death in January of 2014, were the second and third daughters of the late John D and Eva Brown. Also preceding her in death was her husband, Harold General, oldest sister Maggie Mae Harris and baby sister, Johnnie Mae Marshall.
Mattie’s early years were spent with her parents and siblings in Montezuma (Macon County) Georgia. She joined the Brown Chapel CME Church at a young age and enjoyed spending time with her family and the many cousins and friends who lived in the surrounding area. After graduating from Flint River High School in 1952 at the age of nineteen, Mattie decided to follow her big sister Maggie and moved to the “Big Apple”, the state of New York. While there, Mattie trained to become a Nurse’s Aid and worked in the local hospital in Hempstead, New York and as a private caregiver in the homes of many elite clients. She was known for her kindness and compassion by those she cared for.
In 1960, she married the love of her life Harold General, and they lived a happy and fulfilling life in Hempstead until a tragic accident took his life in 1984. Mattie continued to work and live a fulfilling life in New York until her mother became ill and she decided to move back home and help provide care for her. Upon her return home, she lived with her mother and once again became an active member of her home church, Brown Chapel, where she served in several capacities until her health failed her and she was no longer able to attend on a regular basis. She never had any children of her own but adored her nieces and nephews who thought the world of their auntie from the East. Mattie will be remembered for her jovial spirit and her love and devotion to her family and church.
Mattie leaves to mourn her memory, devoted nieces, Sylvia Marshall Lewis (Allen) of Little Rock, Arkansas and Brenda Grace of Warner Robins, Georgia, who both ensured her care when she was no longer able to care for herself, a devoted nephew, Kenneth Grace (Chanita) of Cordele, Georgia. She also leaves one beloved brother-in-law, Freeman Grace Jr. In addition, she leaves cherished memories by her other nieces Wanda Marshall Snead(Donald) Clarksville, Tennessee, Lisa Marshall Williams (Darrell) Indian Head, Maryland, Marva Turner (Doug), and Michelle Grace, Warner Robins, Georgia; other nephews Anthony Grace, Perry, Georgia and Charles Grace, McDonald, Georgia and a host of other great nieces and nephews, family, and friends. Although, absent from the body, Mattie is present with the Lord and united in death with her parents and siblings.
